Design

Layout and design - what's the difference?

Layout
Print graphics such as posters, business cards, books or even catalogs are created on the basis of the layout. However, a good structure - i.e. a good layout - is also important for websites.

Three phases of layout

  • Before you start creating a product, you should first think about a rough layout. These are the first sketches and can include brainstorming about the direction the whole thing should take.

  • Next, the intermediate layout begins - the first details are implemented and a clearer picture emerges.

  • The third phase is about the detailed layout. This is where the individual modules from the first two phases are combined and linked together.

Design
The term design encompasses the aesthetic design of a product and, above all, the process of creative activity. It therefore not only describes the external shape of a product, but also takes its functionality into account. In addition to the graphic design work, this includes the recording and planning of all design-determining factors.

Conclusion
Design is the creation of graphic elements, while layout describes the arrangement, i.e. the structure of text and images.

A practical example:

In the case of a website, for example, design includes the color scheme and the design of graphic navigation elements. The layout, on the other hand, specifies where the navigation is located and where the content and images are positioned.
